Murals are not rolls
A wallpaper mural calculator has a different job from a roll calculator. Retailer calculators generally assume repeating paper. They ask for a roll length and work out how many drops fit on it. A mural has no roll length to divide and no repeat to match, so the same calculator either refuses the job or quietly gives a number that means nothing.
What a mural needs is a fit check. Is the printed image wide enough for the wall, is it tall enough, how much trims off each edge, and how many panels arrive in the box. That is what this sheet reports.
If your paper does repeat and is sold on a roll, the roll calculator is the right sheet. If it is a peel-and-stick mural, the panel arithmetic here still applies; the peel and stick sheet covers repeating removable rolls.
How the mural sheet works
Measure the wall at three points
Width at top, middle, and bottom. Height at left, middle, and right. Take the largest of each. A mural has no repeat to hide an out-of-square wall.
Read the panel size from the listing
Most murals list a panel width and a panel height, or a total mural size and a number of panels. Both modes are on the ticket.
Check the mural is taller than the wall
Panels should exceed your wall height so they can be trimmed at the ceiling and the skirting. If the mural is shorter, most makers will print a custom height.
Decide about a spare panel
A spare is cheap insurance on a mural, because a replacement means a reprint and a possible colour difference between runs.

Panel widths vary by maker; these three are common. Height matters as much as width: the panel has to be taller than the wall so it can be trimmed top and bottom.

What is mural wallpaper?
A single image printed across a set of numbered panels that hang side by side to make one picture. Unlike a repeating wallpaper, a mural has no pattern repeat and the panels are not interchangeable: panel 3 only works between panel 2 and panel 4.
What is the difference between a mural and wallpaper?
Repeating wallpaper is sold by the roll and cut into drops of whatever length your wall needs, with each drop matching its neighbour. A mural is sold as a fixed set sized to a particular wall, printed once, and trimmed to fit. That is why a roll calculator gives the wrong answer for a mural: there is no roll to divide up.
How do I measure a wall for a mural?
Measure the width at the top, middle, and bottom, and the height at the left, middle, and right. Use the largest of each. Walls are rarely square, and a mural has no spare pattern to absorb the difference. Most makers want the wall size plus a couple of inches of bleed on every edge.
How many mural panels do I need?
Divide the wall width by the panel width and round up. The count above does that and adds the spare panel if you ask for one. A 12 ft wall with 24 in panels needs 6 panels across; if the mural is sold as a fixed set, use the set mode below instead.
What is the difference between a mural and standard wallpaper rolls?
Coverage, matching, and reordering. A mural covers one wall exactly once. Standard rolls cover any number of walls in interchangeable drops. If you damage a mural panel you have to reprint that panel; if you damage a drop of repeating paper you cut another from the roll.
Does a wallpaper calculator work for murals?
No. A roll calculator works out drops per roll from the roll length and the cut length, and a mural has neither. Use this sheet for murals and the roll calculator for repeating papers.
How much does a wallpaper mural cost to install?
This site does not quote prices, which change by maker, size, and region. What it can tell you is the quantity: the panel count, the wall area, and how much of the mural trims off, which is what an installer will ask for before quoting.
